Colorado Traffic Violations

If you receive a citation for a traffic violation in Colorado, you can expect to pay a fine.  Colorado state law allows local governments to set fines at their discretion within certain parameters set forth by the Colorado state legislature. You can expect to pay higher fines in wealthier regions or major urban locations.

Colorado Points System and Suspension of Licenses

The Colorado Department of Revenue Division of Motor Vehicles, or Colorado DMV, issues points based on the type and amount of traffic violations on an individual's record. The Colorado DMV monitors the number of points on a driving record by receiving notifications from local courts.  More information on the Colorado DMV Point System is available.  Below are a few common traffic violations and their point values:

Speeding:

  • 5-9 mph: 1 point
  • 10-19 mph: 4 points
  • 20-39 mph: 6 points
  • +40 mph: 12 points
  • Running a Stop Sign/Light: 4 points
  • Careless Driving: 4 points
  • Reckless Driving: 8 points

If you are a Juvenile Driver under 18 years old, your license can be suspended if you receive six points in a year or seven prior to reaching the age of 18. If you are between the ages of 18 and 21, you can temporarily lose your driver's license for accumulating nine points in a year, twelve points in two years, or 14 points prior to reaching 21 years old. As an adult driver, accumulating 12 points in a year or 18 in a two-year span can result in having your license suspended. While points against your Colorado driving record can expire, generally points remain on your driving record for up to seven years.

Attending Colorado Traffic School

If your driving record has too many points or you plead guilty to or are convicted of certain traffic violations, Colorado courts will mandate that you enroll in a driver improvement course.

Colorado courts have discretion over which traffic schools are acceptable to satisfy the requirements of its driver improvement program objectives. If you would like to enroll in an online traffic school or online defensive driving program to satisfy a court-mandate, you should contact the local Colorado court to see if the online traffic school program is pre-approved. If it is not, you can still ask the court if it will allow you to enroll in your preferred Colorado online traffic school or online defensive driving program.

GoToTrafficSchool.com is not officially approved in the State of Colorado to offer online traffic school courses; however, some courts and judges may accept and approve our online traffic school course as part of a plea deal.  It is the sole responsibility of the defendant to ensure that his or her court approves and will accept our online traffic school course as part of a plea deal prior to his or her enrollment in the course.

The Benefits of a Clean Colorado Driving Record

A clean Colorado driving record can help you in several ways, particularly if you participate in a Colorado online traffic school or defensive driving program. First, a clean record will help you avoid expensive fees based on the cumulative effect of multiple Colorado traffic violations.  Demonstrating your dedication to becoming a better, safer driver may help prevent you from losing your Colorado driving privileges when under the discretion of a Colorado court.

Further, a good driving record is essential to getting and keeping your car insurance costs as low as possible. The fewer traffic violations you have on your Colorado driving history, combined with a completed online defensive driving program, the lower your insurance premiums will be.

Colorado Mature Driver Insurance Discounts

In Colorado, an online defensive driving program or online traffic school can also make you eligible for insurance discounts. In Colorado, Mature Drivers above age 50 are also likely eligible for an online mature driver course that can lower insurance payments dramatically.  Contact your insurance company for a list of approved traffic schools.

Colorado Juvenile Insurance Discounts

Juvenile Colorado drivers, both under the age of 18 and between the ages of 18-21, can also take online driver improvement courses to minimize insurance costs. In addition, a Colorado online traffic school program will improve and further develop your defensive driving abilities and teach you meaningful skills to help avoid accidents and traffic ticket going forward.  Contact your insurance company for a list of approved traffic schools.

Colorado Classroom Traffic Schools

If you would like to participate in a more traditional, brick-and-mortar classroom setting for traffic school, you should contact the Colorado Division of Motor Vehicles for a list of approved state-wide Colorado traffic schools.
