The first thing most people do after getting a ticket in New Jersey is panic a little.
Not a lot.
Just enough to start searching things online.
"How many points is this?"
"Will my insurance go up?"
"Can I take a class and make this go away?"
That's usually how people end up looking into defensive driving courses.
I remember talking to someone who got a speeding ticket and spent half the evening reading websites. By the time we talked, he had convinced himself he was about to lose his license.
He wasn't.
But that's what happens when you start reading random things online.
The truth is that there isn't one answer that applies to everybody.
A defensive driving course can be helpful in some situations.
In other situations, it may not change much at all.
That's why I always tell people the same thing.
Before you start signing up for courses, figure out exactly what happened.
Read the ticket.
Read the paperwork.
Look at the information the court sent you.
Most of the confusion comes from people trying to solve a problem before they fully understand what the problem is.
I get it.
Nobody likes getting a ticket.
Nobody likes thinking about points.
But taking ten minutes to understand your situation usually helps more than spending three hours reading opinions from strangers on the internet.
That's probably the most useful thing I can tell you.
